Bonemass Boss Guide: How to Summon and Beat Valheim's Third Boss

How to summon and defeat Bonemass in Valheim — poison mechanics, blunt weakness, gear, arena tips, and common mistakes.

Bonemass is Valheim's third boss, fought in Swamp. It's the poison fight — sources agree Poison Resistance Mead is close to mandatory here, and it's the first boss where damage type genuinely matters. See how this site sources boss guides.

The fight

  • Melee swipe: a long-reach arm swing that hits hard and inflicts poison on top of physical damage. Its force can stagger through a weak block, so shield/block power matters.
  • Body-chunk throw: a slow, telegraphed lob that spawns waves of Skeletons and Blobs on impact — and leaves Bonemass briefly open to free hits during the windup.
  • Poison cloud: a lingering AoE gas cloud, usually following the melee swipe. This is the most dangerous move — get well clear of it rather than trying to tank or roll through it.

Weak to Blunt, resistant to Pierce and Slash — this is the one point every source agrees on unanimously. Some guides also report Frost effectiveness, though that's not universally confirmed, so treat it as a secondary option rather than a sure thing.

A constant localized rainstorm runs through the whole fight, applying the Wet debuff (reduced stamina regen) on top of everything else.

Prep checklist

  • Weapon: Iron Mace, Iron Sledge, Stagbreaker, or a Club — anything Blunt. Frostner is a solid pick if you want to test the reported frost effectiveness.
  • Shield: a high block-power shield (Iron tower or banded shield) for the melee swipe.
  • Armor: full Iron-tier armor — Bronze is consistently flagged as insufficient.
  • Poison Resistance Mead: treated as close to mandatory across every source. Bring multiple doses; fights can outlast one.
  • Healing: Medium Healing Mead or better.
  • Food: hearty combinations like Sausages, Grilled Neck Tails, Serpent Stew, or Queen's Jam.

Arena and terrain

Swamp terrain around the altar is uneven and partly submerged — leveling the ground with a Hoe beforehand prevents getting stuck mid-fight. Leeches in nearby water and wandering Draugr, Wraiths, or Surtlings can interrupt the fight if the area isn't cleared first. The body-chunk throw is the only source of adds — Skeletons and Blobs only arrive through that specific attack, not a passive spawn.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping or letting Poison Resistance Mead expire mid-fight — the single most repeated warning.
  • Bringing Pierce or Slash weapons instead of Blunt.
  • Standing in the poison cloud instead of moving well clear of it.
  • Fighting in unleveled, pitted swamp terrain instead of prepping the ground first.
  • Letting spawned adds pile up instead of clearing them between exchanges.
