Moder Boss Guide: How to Summon and Beat Valheim's Fourth Boss

How to summon and defeat Moder in Valheim — flying and grounded phases, gear, arena tips, and common mistakes.

Moder is Valheim's fourth boss, fought in Mountain. She's the first fight built around a flying enemy — expect more ranged play than earlier bosses. See how this site sources boss guides.

The fight

Moder alternates between two states throughout the fight:

  • Airborne: she circles and hovers, raining down a frost breath barrage from range. She's highly mobile in this state and won't commit to a single attack line — dodge, roll, or use terrain for cover.
  • Grounded: her breath becomes a continuous jet in a straight line, backed by melee-range wing swings, claw swipes, and a bite. This is when she's slow to reposition — the best window to close in and melee.

Important quirk: Moder is immune to Frost damage herself, so Frostner and other frost-based weapons perform poorly here despite being strong elsewhere. Her only confirmed elemental weakness is Fire, though sources disagree on whether Fire or Obsidian arrows deal more total damage.

Prep checklist

  • Ranged weapon: a Draugr Fang bow is the consistent top pick, with a large arrow stockpile (200-300+) as your primary damage plan given how much of the fight she spends airborne.
  • Melee backup: a Silver Sword and Silver Shield for grounded windows — not Frostner.
  • Armor: Wolf armor set, ideally upgraded, for both frost resistance and physical mitigation.
  • Frost Resistance Mead: as a supplement to Wolf armor's built-in resistance.
  • Food: a mix of high-HP and stamina foods — Serpent Stew, Lox Meat, Sausages, or Queen's Jam are common picks.
  • Enter the fight Rested if possible.

Arena and terrain

The altar/summoning platform is indestructible and can double as cover from her aerial attacks. Natural terrain and any wooden structures get destroyed quickly, so they're not reliable long-term cover — raising earthen pillars or digging trenches with a Hoe beforehand gives more durable protection. Clear nearby Stone Golems, Drakes, and wolves before engaging, and avoid starting the fight at night, when more Mountain creatures are active.

Common mistakes

  • Bringing Frostner as a main weapon — her frost immunity guts its damage output.
  • Trying to stay aggressive in melee while she's airborne instead of switching to the bow.
  • Running out of arrows mid-fight from underestimating how ranged-heavy this fight is.
  • Ignoring wolves or other Mountain wildlife that wander into the fight.
  • Poor stamina management on the Mountain's uneven terrain, which can leave you unable to dodge when it matters.
