The Elder Boss Guide: How to Summon and Beat Valheim's Second Boss

How to summon and defeat The Elder in Valheim — fire weakness, attacks, gear, arena tips, and common mistakes.

The Elder is Valheim's second boss, fought in Black Forest. It's the first fight that actually asks for preparation — and the first with a clear elemental weakness worth building around. See how this site sources boss guides.

The fight

Three attacks, all range-dependent:

  • Stomp (melee): slow and easy to dodge, roll, or block — a Bronze Buckler handles it well. It also flattens nearby trees, which can crush you if you haven't cleared the area first.
  • Reaching vines (ranged): the single most dangerous attack — a barrage or wide cone of whips fired from range. Break line of sight with cover the moment you see it start.
  • Root summon (ground hazard): breakable root creatures erupt from the ground around you. Kill them quickly with an axe or just move off the spot.

Fire is The Elder's confirmed weakness, agreed on across every source — fire arrows are consistently called the fastest, cleanest kill. Physical weapons work fine too, just less efficiently. No source found a strong resistance to any other damage type.

Prep checklist

  • Weapon: a Finewood Bow with Fire Arrows is the most-recommended core loadout — bring a large reserve (150-200+ arrows). A Bronze Axe covers melee and clears roots quickly.
  • Shield: a Bronze Buckler for blocking the stomp.
  • Armor: full Bronze set, or a mobility-focused Troll Hide alternative.
  • Food: Carrot Soup, Deer Stew, or Grilled Neck Tail, plus Queen's Jam as an all-rounder. Aim for a solid HP buffer — the vine attack can take a big chunk in one hit.
  • Potions: Minor Healing Mead and Minor Stamina Mead if you've fermented them.
  • Arena prep: placing campfires around the arena beforehand adds a slow passive fire-damage source against the boss, on top of keeping some early enemies away.

Arena and terrain

The altar sits inside a ring of four indestructible stone pillars — the single most useful tactical feature in the fight, both for breaking vine line-of-sight and for safe stamina regen between exchanges. The real threat usually isn't The Elder himself but nearby Greydwarf spawner nests, Trolls, or Skeletons wandering in mid-fight — clearing the surrounding area before summoning is the most repeated piece of advice across every guide.

Common mistakes

  • Not clearing nearby Greydwarf nests first — a "harmless" nest can keep feeding extra enemies into an already dangerous fight.
  • Bringing Bronze gear but no fire arrows — the weakness is significant enough to build the whole strategy around.
  • Standing near trees during his stomp.
  • Running out of stamina mid-dodge; The Elder doesn't despawn and will chase over long distances once summoned.
