Valheim Swamp Guide: Creatures, Iron, and Bonemass

Swamp biome guide for Valheim — Draugr, Iron via Sunken Crypts, poison hazards, and how to summon Bonemass.

Reviewed 2026-08-19

Swamp is Valheim's third biome, and the first real gear check — it's where Iron enters the game. This guide covers what lives here, how to get Iron safely, and how to beat the third boss, Bonemass. See how this site sources world guides.

Where Swamp fits

Swamp follows Black Forest and requires the Swamp Key (dropped by The Elder) to open its Sunken Crypts. Defeating Bonemass here grants the Wishbone, needed to find Silver in Mountain, the next biome.

Creatures

CreatureNotes
DraugrHostile; the most common Swamp enemy, wields axes or spears. Parrying works well.
Draugr EliteHostile; tougher variant, resistant to fire and immune to poison.
SkeletonHostile; low threat alone, dangerous in groups from crypt body piles. Weak to blunt damage.
LeechHostile; aquatic only, inflicts poison. Safe to fight from land.
BlobHostile; poison creature that bursts into a poison cloud on death. Weak to blunt, frost, and lightning.
OozerHostile; upgraded Blob, splits into two Blobs when killed.
SurtlingHostile; spawns near fire geysers in small groups, deals fire damage.
WraithHostile; flying spectral enemy, more manageable outside the Swamp.

Resources

ResourceSource
Scrap Iron → IronDug from Muddy Scrap Piles in Sunken Crypts, then smelted in a Smelter (needs Coal)
Ancient BarkChopped from Ancient/Swamp trees with a Bronze axe or better
GuckFound on Ancient trees; needed for the Draugr Fang bow
Withered BonesFound in Sunken Crypts and dropped by Skeletons; used to summon Bonemass
ThistleSwamp plant used in Poison Resistance and Frost Resistance meads

No ore is mined directly in the Swamp — Iron comes only from smelting Scrap Iron dug out of crypts.

Boss: Bonemass

Bonemass is summoned at a Forsaken Altar within the Swamp.

  • Summon: sacrifice 10 Withered Bones on the altar.
  • Finding the altar: a Vegvísir found inside a Sunken Crypt, or a Runestone at swamp ruins, marks the altar on the map.
  • Drops: 1 Bonemass Trophy and 1 Wishbone.
  • Why it matters: the Wishbone is effectively required to locate buried Silver deposits in the Mountain biome. Mounting the trophy grants a large physical damage resistance buff for several minutes.

Building and survival tips

  • Poison is the Swamp's defining hazard — brew Poison Resistance Mead (using Thistle) before extended exploration.
  • Near-constant rain causes the Wet debuff and combines with cold for a Freezing risk at night.
  • Waterlogged ground slows movement, and digging for buried loot is noisy and can draw nearby enemies.
  • A boat is often needed to cross Swamp waterways — watch for Leeches damaging hulls.
  • Sunken Crypt doors are sealed until opened with the Swamp Key; once opened, a crypt stays open permanently.

Points of interest

Sunken Crypts (green-torch-marked underground dungeons, the main Iron source, guarded by Draugr, Blobs, and skeleton-spawning body piles), stone tower ruins holding Runestones, fire geysers that spawn Surtlings, and the Forsaken Altar where Bonemass is summoned.
