Valheim Plains Guide: Creatures, Black Metal, and Yagluth

Plains biome guide for Valheim — Deathsquitos, Fuling villages, Black Metal, Lox taming, and how to summon Yagluth.

Reviewed 2026-08-19

Plains is Valheim's fifth biome, and widely considered the most dangerous relative to the gear tier available when players first arrive. This guide covers what lives here, how to farm Black Metal, and how to beat the fifth boss, Yagluth. See how this site sources world guides.

Where Plains fits

Plains follows Mountain. There's no key or item gate stopping entry, but its enemies hit far above the biome's position in the tech tree — silver-tier gear at minimum is recommended. Farming Black Metal here and defeating Yagluth prepares players for Mistlands, the next biome.

Boss: Yagluth

Yagluth's altar is a distinctive set of massive hand-shaped standing stones within the Plains.

  • Summon: place 5 Fuling Totems on the altar. Totems drop from Fuling Berserkers and appear in village chests.
  • Finding the altar: a Vegvísir at nearby rune circles marks its location.
  • Drops: a Yagluth Trophy and Torn Spirits.
  • Why it matters: mounting the trophy grants temporary resistance to fire, frost, and lightning damage. Defeating Yagluth is the conventional readiness milestone for Mistlands, and unlocks new events and trader offerings.

Building and survival tips

  • Keep a shield raised at all times — Deathsquitos and regular Fulings both punish players caught without a block ready.
  • Approach Fuling villages with stealth, sniping Shamans and Berserkers before engaging the main group.
  • Build small fortified forward bases rather than full settlements, connected by portal for fast retreat.
  • Deathsquitos can spawn on beaches and will chase far out over open water — stay alert while sailing near Plains coastlines.

Points of interest

Fuling Villages (built from stone, bone, and hide, holding Barley, Flax, Black Metal Scrap, and Totems), Tar Pits guarded by Growths, scattered Fuling outposts, and Yagluth's hand-shaped Forsaken Altar.
