Valheim Mountain Guide: Creatures, Silver, and Moder
Mountain biome guide for Valheim — Wolves, Drakes, Frost Caves, Silver ore, and how to summon Moder.
Reviewed 2026-08-19
Mountain is Valheim's fourth biome, and the first that actively kills unprepared players through cold rather than combat alone. This guide covers what lives here, how to get Silver, and how to beat the fourth boss, Moder. See how this site sources world guides.
Where Mountain fits
Mountain follows Swamp and requires the Wishbone (dropped by Bonemass) to find Silver ore. Frost Resistance — from mead or Wolf-fur armor — is required to survive here. Defeating Moder unlocks crafting stations that gate progress into Plains, the next biome.

| Cultist, Ulv, Bat | Hostile; found together inside Frost Caves. |
Resources
| Resource | Source |
|---|---|
| Silver | Underground veins, invisible without a Wishbone; needs an Iron pickaxe to mine |
| Obsidian | Above-ground black rock nodes; needs an Iron pickaxe |
| Frost Resin / Freeze Glands | Dropped by Drakes |
| Wolf pelt, fang, meat | Wolf drops; used for Wolf armor and the Wolf Fur Cape |
| Dragon Eggs | Found in guarded Drake nests; three are needed to summon Moder |
Boss: Moder
Moder is fought at her altar within the Mountain.
- Summon: place 3 Dragon Eggs on the altar. Eggs are heavy and cannot be sent through portals, so they must be carried on foot or by cart.
- Drops: Dragon Tears and a Moder Trophy.
- Why it matters: Dragon Tears are required to build the Artisan Table, which unlocks the Spinning Wheel, Windmill, and Blast Furnace — core prerequisites for Plains and Mistlands crafting. Mounting the trophy grants a Forsaken Power that provides a tailwind while sailing.
Building and survival tips
- Cold halts health regeneration and drains stamina recovery; counter it with Frost Resistance Mead, Wolf-fur armor, or a sheltered campfire (wind can extinguish open fires).
- Being wet increases susceptibility to cold — avoid entering Mountain soaked.
- Steep slopes drain stamina fast and risk fall damage; carve ledges and keep a stamina buffer while climbing.
- Stone Golems camouflage as ordinary rock piles, so mining near stone formations carries ambush risk.
- A foothill outpost near the base of the Mountain, connected by portal, is safer than a deep-territory base.
Points of interest
Frost Caves (instanced dungeons added via a free content update, populated by Cultists, Ulv, and Bats, and the source of Fenris crafting materials), Drake nests holding Dragon Eggs, cairns that are sometimes dormant Stone Golems, abandoned cabins and towers, and Moder's altar.
