Valheim Deep North Guide: Biome, Boss, Resources and Crafting
Progress through Valheim's Deep North: turn Petrified Tissue into Bloodgold, build the Frost Foundry, clear Mörkhalla, and reach Kall Fimbulbringer.
Reviewed 2026-09-19
Deep North is Valheim's final biome, released with 1.0 on September 9, 2026. Its progression links resource gathering, cast-making, dungeon keys, and Jotun invasions. This guide follows that route from Fader to Kall Fimbulbringer; the region reference provides a compact creature and material checklist.
The crafting and dungeon details below are cross-checked against independent community sources; official notes take precedence for release features and world compatibility.
What's in the biome
Deep snow needs clearing before construction; bring a Snow Shovel to prepare an outpost. Frozen seas and ponds create slippery routes, so leave stamina for a retreat and avoid treating an unfamiliar ice crossing as a safe shortcut. These are good reasons to establish a return route before pushing inland.
Moose can be tamed and ridden. On foot, plan short gathering trips around food, storage, and repair access; the next useful material may require a dungeon rather than another sweep of the surface.
Creatures and boss
Start by learning which encounters advance your current crafting goal:
| Encounter | Useful materials or role |
|---|---|
| Coastal Seals | Pelts for Ember Charges; also drop Blubber |
| Moose | Meat, Hide, and Sinew; also the biome's rideable animal |
| Gammeltroll | Defeat it, then break the petrified remains with an Ember Charge for Petrified Tissue |
| Elaking in Winding Tunnels | Intricate Key moulds and Hair Bundles |
| Barka | Frozen Branches for equipment |
| Krigen and Hexen in Mörkhalla | Vanguard and Caller moulds respectively; Krigen also supply Memorial Coal, Hexen Nornathread |
The full creature reference adds dungeon enemies and material drops. Kall is reached through the Aesir Passage after the invasion chain, rather than by simply finding him while exploring.
Resources and crafting stations
Bloodgold starts with a Gammeltroll, not a metal vein. Use Fader's Relic to build an Eternal Pyre and collect Embers. Combine Embers with Seal Pelts to make Ember Charges. After defeating a Gammeltroll, break its petrified body with a charge and process the resulting Petrified Tissue in a Blast Furnace for Bloodgold.
Gather Frostcores in Winding Tunnels for the new production stations. Then keep both branches of the workshop supplied:
| Station | Input and output |
|---|---|
| Blast Furnace | Petrified Tissue, with Coal as fuel → Bloodgold |
| Frigid Kiln | 5 Ice → 1 Liquid Frost |
| Black Forge | A mould, Bloodgold, and the recipe's other materials → a cast |
| Frost Foundry | A cast, with Liquid Frost as fuel → the finished item, including Intricate Keys and cast-based equipment |
Do not stop at making a cast: the foundry is the finishing step. Likewise, owning a foundry is not enough if the kiln has no Ice. Keep a fuel reserve before committing materials to a new weapon or dungeon key.
Frostfire Essence and Thunderblood Essence come from Fallen Warriors summoned at Ancient Altars using Memorial Coal. They supply the corresponding weapon upgrades. Nornathread, dropped by Hexen, is needed for Caller equipment and magical weapons. Save these materials while clearing Mörkhalla; they support your combat upgrades alongside the main boss route.
Locations and dungeons
- Abandoned villages and Winding Tunnels: search below the village buildings for the first dungeon tier. Gather Frostcores and Intricate Key moulds here.
- Make an Intricate Key: a level 4 Black Forge turns a mould and 5 Bloodgold into the cast; the Frost Foundry finishes it with Liquid Frost.
- Mörkhalla: use the key to enter. Collect armor moulds and crafting materials on the descent, and find the Vegvisir that marks the Aesir Passage. Breaking the Malicious Ice at the bottom starts a Jotun Invasion elsewhere in the world.
- Jotun Invasion: travel to its location and break the invasion's ice core for one Malicious Blood. Repeat the dungeon/invasion chain for three Blood in total.
- Aesir Passage: offer the three Blood in the Strange Bowl to reach The Prison and Kall. Read the boss preparation checklist before entering.
Ancient Altars are a useful equipment detour: spend the Memorial Coal collected during dungeon runs on encounters that can yield the weapon essences.
New gear families
Nord weapons form the new equipment tier; Frostfire and Thunderblood provide further weapon options. The cast system connects surface materials and dungeon moulds to the Frost Foundry. The armor families include Protector, Vanguard, Caller, and Lox Fur, with Caller equipment and the new staves giving Nornathread a practical use for magic builds.
Choose upgrades for the next encounter. Kall resists several elemental types, so a weapon's physical damage matters even when its name says Frostfire or Thunderblood. See the boss damage table. The 1.0.10 hotfix also fixes Deep North heavy-armor repairability.
Updating an existing world
Iron Gate says existing saves remain usable, but proper new biome generation requires unexplored areas. A fresh start is the studio's recommendation.
- Preserve a world and character backup before updating or changing mods.
- If you already explored the north, compare the existing-world options before planning a long expedition.
- Update server and clients together, then test joining and saving with the server update procedure.
- Review mod compatibility and achievement eligibility separately.
