Valheim Server Not Showing or Failed to Connect

Diagnose a missing Valheim dedicated server, failed connection, join-code problem, version mismatch, Steam port issue, or PlayFab crossplay configuration.

Reviewed 2026-09-17

When a Valheim server does not appear or a player sees Failed to connect, start with the server process and selected networking backend. Steam and PlayFab crossplay require different checks, so random port changes often waste time.

Use this order:

  1. confirm the server reaches Game server connected;
  2. match server and client versions;
  3. identify Steam or PlayFab crossplay;
  4. check visibility and the correct join method;
  5. test the backend-specific network path;
  6. review passwords, permissions, mods, and platform controls.

Step 1: confirm the server is actually ready

Iron Gate identifies Game server connected as the ready-state message. Until that appears, server-list, join-code, and port tests are premature.

If the process stops or never reaches that message:

  • review the launch line for smart quotes, missing values, or a broken executable path;
  • confirm the world and save paths are accessible to the server account;
  • confirm the selected base port is not already used by another instance;
  • on Linux, review the documented library requirements;
  • inspect the latest server output for the first error rather than the final shutdown message;
  • temporarily return to a minimal configuration with name, port, world, password, and visibility before adding modifiers.

Do not repeatedly restart a world that may be failing to save. Preserve a current backup first.

Step 2: match versions

The server and joining clients need compatible game versions. After a patch, the dedicated-server tool and the game client can update at different times.

Check:

  • the server application finished updating before restart;
  • every client finished updating rather than leaving a pending download;
  • nobody is still on a public-test or older branch;
  • server-side and required client-side mods target the same game version;
  • the server was restarted after files changed.

If the problem began immediately after an update, follow the safe server update guide and compare a clean, unmodded test with the production configuration.

Step 3: identify the networking backend

Look at the production launch line.

ConfigurationBackendEligible clients
-crossplay presentPlayFab crossplaySupported platforms
-crossplay absentSteamSteam users

Without -crossplay, non-Steam platforms cannot see or join the server. Adding -crossplay changes the network path; restart the server and wait for it to become ready before testing again.

Step 4: check visibility

-public 1 makes the server visible in the browser. -public 0 hides it and limits joining to a direct method supported by the selected backend.

A hidden server is not necessarily offline. If the intention is private access, test the correct direct join method instead of changing the server to public merely to make it searchable.

When searching the public list:

  • use the exact server name from -name;
  • clear filters that may exclude it;
  • wait until Game server connected appears;
  • verify the client is looking through a compatible backend;
  • try a direct method to separate discovery from connectivity.

Steam-backend troubleshooting

Valheim uses the configured base port and the next port. With the default base port, the range is 2456-2457.

For Steam users outside the host network, Iron Gate says the range must have internet access. Review each layer:

  1. The launch line uses the intended base port.
  2. The host firewall allows the server application and both ports.
  3. Router forwarding maps both ports to the correct host on the local network.
  4. The host's local address has not changed since the forwarding rule was created.
  5. The internet connection provides a reachable public address rather than carrier-grade NAT or another upstream restriction.
  6. The player uses the current public address and base port.

Router interfaces and ISP setups differ. Use the router and ISP documentation for the actual forwarding steps. Do not open unrelated port ranges copied from an old guide.

Steam server works locally but not externally

This points toward the host firewall, router forwarding, public address, or ISP path—not the world files. Test from an external connection rather than from the host itself.

Steam server works by address but not in the list

Connectivity is working. Recheck -public 1, server name, filters, and list refresh rather than changing ports that already accept a direct connection.

PlayFab crossplay troubleshooting

With -crossplay, the server uses PlayFab relay networking. Iron Gate states that outside access does not require port forwarding.

Supported connection methods include:

  • public IP address and port;
  • join code;
  • server list.

PlayFab crossplay servers cannot be reached through a private local address or loopback address. Do not test with 127.0.0.1, localhost, or a private LAN address. Use the current join code, public address and port, or server-list entry—even when the player is in the same building.

Join code does not work

  • Confirm -crossplay is present in the running configuration.
  • Wait for Game server connected before copying the code.
  • Obtain the current code from the running session rather than an old message.
  • Confirm the joining player uses Join Game → Add server.
  • Check client and server versions.
  • Test another supported join method to separate code handling from server reachability.

Multiple crossplay servers conflict

Iron Gate documents -instanceid for multiple PlayFab servers using the same port and MAC address. Give each instance a unique identity and keep its world, save directory, launch script, and logs separate.

Password and permission checks

A discoverable server can still reject a player.

  • Confirm the player has the current password.
  • Keep the password out of screenshots, repositories, support tickets, and public launch scripts.
  • Review bannedlist.txt for the player's case-sensitive Platform User ID.
  • If permittedlist.txt is used, confirm the player is included; Iron Gate warns that everyone not listed is excluded.
  • Confirm the list files come from the active save root, especially when -savedir is used.

Platform-specific checks

Iron Gate confirms that an Xbox console can join a dedicated server when crossplay is enabled but cannot run the standalone server application. If the Xbox crossplay option is unavailable, parental-control or multiplayer permissions may be hiding it.

Valheim 1.0 released with full crossplay across supported PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 platforms. Check platform-specific menus and rollout status before treating a delayed client update as a server failure.

Modded-server checks

Iron Gate does not provide official mod support and does not guarantee that mods will work with Valheim 1.0.

When troubleshooting a modded server:

  1. preserve a backup and version list;
  2. confirm whether each mod is server-only or required on clients;
  3. compare server and client mod versions;
  4. review the mod loader's own logs separately from Valheim output;
  5. reproduce the connection on a clean test instance before changing the production world;
  6. never open the only production save in an experimental environment.

A clean server working does not prove the world is damaged; it often isolates a configuration or mod compatibility issue.

Wrong world or fresh spawn

This is a save-selection problem rather than a network-discovery problem.

  • Check the exact -world value.
  • Check whether -savedir points somewhere unexpected.
  • Confirm the transferred world data is in the active save location.
  • Stop before players build in the unintended world.
  • Return to the world migration guide.

Final connection checklist

  • Server reaches Game server connected.
  • Server and client versions match.
  • Mods and branches match where applicable.
  • Backend is known: Steam or PlayFab crossplay.
  • -public matches the intended discovery method.
  • Steam uses the configured port and port +1 through the external network path.
  • PlayFab tests avoid local and loopback addresses.
  • The join code is current.
  • Password and player lists were checked.
  • -world and -savedir select the intended world.
  • A backup exists before further changes.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Valheim server not showing in the list?

The most common configuration checks are readiness, -public 1, compatible backend, correct version, and exact server name. A hidden server with -public 0 will not appear publicly.

Which ports does a Valheim server use?

Valheim uses the configured base port and the next port. The documented default is 2456-2457. Steam-backend outside access normally requires that range to be reachable.

Does Valheim crossplay require port forwarding?

Iron Gate says PlayFab crossplay uses relay networking and does not require port forwarding for outside access. Steam-backend servers follow a different network path.

Why can I not join my crossplay server with a local IP?

PlayFab crossplay does not support local or loopback connections. Use the public address and port, current join code, or server list.
