Fader Boss Guide: Valheim Ashlands Fight and Preparation

How to summon and defeat Fader in Valheim's Ashlands — attacks, fire resistance, gear, and arena tips for the endgame coliseum fight.

Reviewed 2026-09-19

Fader is the Ashlands boss before Deep North, fought in a coliseum arena in Ashlands. It's a long, fire-heavy endurance fight that gets more chaotic the lower his health drops. See how this site sources boss guides.

Update — September 2026: Valheim 1.0 adds Kall Fimbulbringer and updates Fader Relic functionality. See patch notes.

The fight

Fader mixes melee and fire-based ranged attacks, with more frequent add waves and tighter attack cooldowns as his health drops — treat the last stretch of the fight as an endurance test rather than a clean pattern fight.

  • Bite and claw swipes (melee): each on independent cooldowns.
  • Spin attack: a full-circle AoE swipe around him.
  • Meteor strike: falling meteors that leave lingering fire pools, mostly in the early-to-mid part of the fight.
  • Wall of fire: a closing ring of fire with at least one gap — move through it rather than standing still.
  • Flamebreath: a long, unblockable line of fire, absent very early and very late in the fight.
  • Fissure: ground markers that erupt into spikes and lingering fire a few seconds later. Cannot be blocked or tanked — several guides call this the single biggest killer in the fight.
  • Roar: summons waves of Charred Warriors and Marksmen, more frequently as the fight goes on.

Fader is immune to Fire and Spirit damage and resistant to Pierce — don't build around any of those. No confirmed elemental weakness; Frost and Lightning perform better than Pierce, Fire, or Spirit.

Prep checklist

  • Armor: Flametal-tier armor, described as close to mandatory.
  • Weapon: Slash or Blunt weapons — avoid Pierce, Fire, and Spirit damage types. Berserkir/Primal Berserker axes are a commonly recommended melee pick.
  • Fire Resistance (Barley Wine): treated as essentially non-negotiable — several guides frame the fight as very difficult without it.
  • Healing and sustain: Major Healing Mead for burst recovery, plus a stamina or Eitr sustain mead.
  • Portal placement: set up your return portal and bed well outside the arena. Fader's attacks destroy nearby structures, including portals placed too close.

Arena and terrain

The coliseum itself has no passive hazards like lava pools or cinder rain — every hazard comes from Fader's own attacks landing on the ground. Overlapping fire pools from meteors, flamebreath, and fissures can make large parts of the arena unusable if you don't keep moving; run in curves rather than straight lines to avoid the wall-of-fire boxing you in, and watch for getting cornered between Fader and the arena's stone structure.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping Fire Resistance mead or letting it lapse mid-fight.
  • Standing still or running in a straight line during the fissure attack.
  • Getting greedy for extra hits during his windups instead of patient, short exchanges.
  • Letting summoned Charred adds stack up in the later, faster-spawning stretch of the fight.
  • Placing a return portal too close to the arena, where it gets destroyed mid-fight.
