Eikthyr Boss Guide: How to Summon and Beat Valheim's First Boss

How to summon and defeat Eikthyr, Valheim's first boss — attacks, gear, arena tips, and common mistakes.

Eikthyr is Valheim's first boss, fought in Meadows. He's not a hard fight, but he's the tutorial for how every later boss works — summon item, altar, trophy, and a real moveset to learn. See how this site sources boss guides.

The fight

Eikthyr has three attacks and no phase change — his moveset doesn't shift at low health, so what you see early is what you fight throughout.

  • Antler swing (melee): a close-range gore attack at roughly 4-5 meters, clearly telegraphed and blockable with any shield.
  • Lightning beam (ranged): he rears back with a visible windup, then fires a lightning bolt in a line. Sidestep or use cover the moment you see the charge.
  • Lightning stomp (AoE): he stands upright, then slams down for a shockwave with knockback around him. Roll or sprint away rather than trying to tank it.

He turns slowly after attacking, so circling to his flank or rear during that recovery window is free damage. Community-favored damage type is Pierce (bow and arrows), though no source found him strongly resistant to Blunt or Slash either — a Wood Shield blocks nearly everything he throws.

Prep checklist

  • Weapon: a Crude Bow with Wood or Flint arrows for kiting, or a Flint Spear/Axe plus a shield for a block-and-counter approach. Both are viable for a first attempt.
  • Armor: full Leather Armor if you have it.
  • Food: eat three different foods before summoning — Cooked Meat or Deer Meat, Grilled Neck Tail, Honey, or Mushrooms are common early options.
  • Rest: activate the Rested buff near a fire before the fight — an easy, often-skipped boost to health and stamina regen.

Arena and terrain

The altar sits in a semi-open area with stone pillars nearby that block line-of-sight on his lightning beam and obstruct his charge — useful cover to kite around. Watch the trees near the altar: his melee swing is strong enough to knock them down, and a falling tree can hit you if you're fighting with your back to one.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping a shield — a basic Wood Shield absorbs nearly everything he does.
  • Standing too close when he rears up for the stomp; the AoE catches anyone nearby.
  • Not using his slow turnaround to get free hits from his flank.
  • Fighting under trees his attacks can knock down.

He's not dangerous for his damage — he's dangerous for teaching new players to underestimate Valheim's bosses. The next one, The Elder, asks for real preparation.
