Valheim 1.0 Beginner Guide: Your First Days and Progression Route
Start Valheim 1.0 with a practical, spoiler-light route through food, shelter, crafting, bosses, biomes, multiplayer, and safe world choices.

Update — September 2026: Valheim 1.0 and Deep North were released on September 9, 2026. Launch-era guidance below should be read alongside the September 11 hotfixes, including the Steam achievement opt-in. See patch notes.
Valheim is a survival and exploration game that can be played alone or cooperatively with up to nine other players. Progression connects exploration, resources, crafting, building, and the Forsaken bosses associated with each biome.
This beginner route avoids exact damage values and speed-run tactics. It focuses on decisions that remain useful across balance updates and helps new or returning players progress through Valheim 1.0.
Before creating a world
Choose whether the world is primarily for solo play, occasional hosting, or a persistent group server.
| Situation | Practical starting choice |
|---|---|
| Solo or same-household play | Create a local world and keep regular offline backups |
| A small group with one reliable host | Use a player-hosted world, understanding it is available only while that host runs it |
| A group that plays at different times | Use a dedicated server or managed host |
| Returning community with an old world | Back it up and decide whether preserving builds or receiving completely fresh generation matters more |
A world seed determines the generated layout. You do not need a recommended seed for a first playthrough; discovering the world is part of normal progression.
For Valheim 1.0, existing worlds remain usable, but Iron Gate says new content generates correctly only in unexplored areas and recommends starting over for the intended full experience. See existing world versus new world.
Your first priorities
Follow the opening guidance
Use the tutorial information and interact with the starting location before roaming far away. The early game introduces the tools needed to gather, craft, build, and mark objectives.
Gather without overloading yourself
Collect nearby basic materials while leaving enough inventory capacity to return safely. Early progress is faster when resources are stored at a known shelter instead of carried through every fight.
Eat regularly
Food is not a hunger timer that directly kills an unfed character. It determines available health and stamina, so entering combat, swimming, or making a long journey without active foods creates avoidable risk.
Use foods that fit the task rather than chasing one universal combination. More health provides a larger margin for damage; more stamina supports movement, gathering, building, blocking, and repeated attacks.
Read the food and cooking guide for a progression-oriented overview.
Establish a small working shelter
A first base needs to be functional, not permanent. Prioritize a protected place for crafting, storage, rest, and a respawn point. Keep fire and smoke behavior in mind and avoid committing rare materials to a location before understanding its surroundings.
The building and base-location guide covers shelter, stability, access, and expansion without prescribing one design.
Learn one biome at a time
Valheim's official progression moves through biomes with distinct difficulty and resources. A biome's Forsaken boss helps open the next stage of progression.
Scout the edge of a harder biome before carrying valuable equipment deep inside it. Establish a safe return route, mark useful locations, and bring materials needed to repair or recover.
Use the world and biome guide and progression roadmap when you want the full order.
A spoiler-light progression loop
Repeat this loop for each stage of the game:
- Explore the current biome and learn its environmental risks.
- Gather its new materials and unlock available crafting options.
- Improve food, equipment, shelter, and transport.
- Locate the associated Forsaken altar through normal exploration.
- Prepare a backup route and replacement supplies before the boss attempt.
- Defeat the boss and examine what the reward makes possible.
- Establish access to the next biome before moving the whole base.
You do not need to abandon an earlier base after every boss. Many groups maintain a central home and smaller biome outposts.
Death and recovery
Death can separate a character from carried equipment and reduce skill progress depending on the world's settings. Before a dangerous expedition:
- leave replacement food and basic equipment at the base;
- use a nearby respawn point where appropriate;
- mark the route and avoid relying on one boat or portal;
- do not carry every valuable material at once;
- ask another player for help before turning one recovery into several deaths.
World modifiers can change the death penalty and other rules. Record those settings when joining or moving a shared world.
Starting with friends
Valheim supports one to ten players. Decide these rules early:
- who owns the authoritative world and backups;
- when boss progression can advance;
- whether resources and equipment are shared;
- whether mods are allowed;
- which networking backend and platforms must connect;
- whether world modifiers may change.
For a persistent group, continue with the dedicated-server setup guide. Mixed-platform groups should also read the crossplay guide.
World modifiers for a first playthrough
Valheim provides named presets and individual modifiers for combat, death penalty, resources, raids, portals, and several checkbox-style rules. Normal settings preserve the standard progression experience.
Changing a setting is not inherently wrong, but document it before inviting others. Iron Gate has confirmed that some modifiers, including Hammer mode, can affect achievement eligibility in 1.0.
Use the world modifiers guide before changing a long-running or achievement-focused world.
Preparing for Valheim 1.0
New players on 1.0 can simply create a new world on the current build. Returning players should first:
- back up characters and worlds;
- decide between a fresh world and an established one;
- remove or update mods only on a copy;
- verify the installed client and server versions;
- review achievement restrictions before using developer commands or marked items.
The Valheim 1.0 preparation checklist separates confirmed launch information from details still awaiting the public release.
Common beginner mistakes
Exploring without a return plan
Carry only what the trip needs, mark the route, and keep recovery supplies somewhere safe.
Treating food as optional in dangerous areas
Food controls the health and stamina available to solve problems. Refresh it before combat or a long crossing.
Building too much before scouting
Start with a working shelter. Expand after checking nearby resources, coast access, and threats.
Entering a harder biome because it is nearby
Biome borders do not scale to the character. Prepare in the current stage before committing to the next.
Depending on one save copy
Cloud synchronization and automatic backups are useful, but neither replaces a deliberate offline copy before an update, migration, or mod change.
